MAY 29th – JUNE 9th, 2017

The Current State of Transatlantic Relations – Germany, the United States, and Russia

Together with Prof. Michael C. Kimmage, Ph.D. we will address some of the policy questions Germany and the United States collectively face: preserving or reordering the EU, defining the purpose and structure of NATO, and managing relations with the countries between Russia and the EU, which are currently contested. Prof. Kimmage will evaluate the common endeavor for Germany and the United States, some 25 years after the end of the Cold war, and at the same time assess the growing divergence between these two countries. In addition we will go back in time and analyze the “idea of the West” as it has derived from the Cold War. This is an idea rooted not only in strategic imperatives but in culture. It might be an idea in decline, weakened by the forces of globalization as well as by a resurgence of populist nationalism throughout Europe and the United States.
